Mea culpa, I later realized I accidentally credited King Alfred the Great with the unification of England. Duhhh! It was his son, King Edward the Elder (not to be confused with King Edward the First)! Also, Edward's sister Aethelflaed, Lady of Mercia, probably did half the work at least.
